PROJECTS IN  PRACTICE︎︎︎

LOWTECH - DISASTER RESPONSE - WARSCAPE - CROWD SOURCING

I.KYLYM 2022

PUBLICATION - INSTALLATION - SYSTEM DESIGN

The aim of project “Kylym” is to conduct an analysis of the current composition of Ukrainian energy systems, analyse its dependency on Russian resources, explore alternatives to diversify the supply of domestic energy sourcing, and offer insights on the best possible solution for energy oriented war disaster response on a local scale. The project presents integrational low-tech energy harvesting devices that merge with a symbol of Eastern European culture; The wall carpet.

How can tools such as low-tech, local and domestic energy sourcing technologies be put into practice in critical situations such as humanitarian disasters?

Discovery of “Kreosan” an educational and entertaining Ukrainian YouTube channel run in Lugansk by video blogger Alexander Kryukov. The channel is devoted to experiments with electricity and electronic devices, advice on survival in wartime. Uses of E-waste material from war-scapes with initiatives to build self-sustaining survival devices opened up questions such as: How does fundamental survival instructions/information spread in critical situations?

Energy harvesting, the collection of small amounts of ambient energy to power wireless devices, is a very promising technology for applications where batteries are impractical, such as body sensor networks and inaccessible remote systems.

Based on already existing models like the SIR model, initially developed by Ronald Ross, William Hamer, and others in the early twentieth century(Anderson 1991). This model is taken and applied to a disaster response scenario that uses crowdsourcing and IOT to direct the response supplies to the conflict zone.  In the scenario that this project revolves around the relief supplies would be instructions to building energy harvesting devices from the environment around. Assuming that the people in the affected area are randomly distributed, some of the victims can find others within a certain distance and carry out self-aid and buddy-aid( which in the case of this project would mean either sharing information about how to build energy harvesting devices either build these devices together).

ATLAS

SILKSCREEN - PUBLICATION - COLLAGE - MONTAGE - PRINT

The project revolves around the concept of liminality. This idea manifests with in the realm of human perception on reality. The visual research archive’s scenes that reflect detachment from the surrounding environment exemplifyng how derealization is associated with mental disorder and feelings of annihilation.

The focus of the archive takes a leap into the realm of a spacial vacuum, such as discovering outer space and the finite of planet earth. Ventures into the spaces of high tech underground engineering or zooming into the human body where we leap into the underworld of the modern age hoping to answer questions of mortality. Sequences that present “visitor” entities embodies concepts of detachment from the body and other bodies.

“The Liminal atlas” presents extractions of the archive. A publication that focuses on complementary image based sequences together with a silkscreen print material focus. How can print embody liminality?

IV.SPACE TOURISM 2021

INSTALLATION - RESEARCH

(sub)Liminal space where we are betwixt and between the familiar and the completely unknown. There alone is our old world left behind, while we are not yet sure of the new existence. That’s a good space where genuine newness can begin. Get there often and stay as long as you can by whatever means possible. This is the sacred space where the old world is able to fall apart, and a new world is revealed.

Looking towards outer space, we can not ignore the immense density of emptiness. Based on the quest of representing a strong sense of deserted space, in my research I come across the growing community of liminal spaces. The world around us is specifically designed to withhold human activity. Places fur fill the needs of the user but, we don’t question the in-between spaces that carry us from one destination to the other. In the reality of liminal spaces we can imagine an in-between room that has no destination. Outer space can be defined as such. Of course, we haven’t fully explored the immense array of space but, until now, we can surely state that outer space seems like an endless road to nowhere.

“(sub)liminal space” is an active simulation that is in constant growth with users, it’s purpose is to bring to light the beauty of liminal spaces and to prepare us for the future where ventures to outer space will be more affordable and accessible to the public. Confrontation with nothingness and reflection upon our everything is needed to develop a common consciousness.

Discussions on /r/LiminalSpace/ subreddit have led to conclude that there is a growing community of people that are curious in sharing and debunking their experiences with liminal spaces. The conversations mostly deconstruct feelings of anemoia ( anemoia - n. nostalgia for a time you’ve never known) and the desire to experience it.

EPISODE ONE -SPORTS DIPLOMACY

The “soft Power Podcast” is a podcast format essay that acts as an analysis platform for contemporary soft power infrastructures. The intent is to bring a new narative through which we can have a better understanding of the implications of international and national diplomacy.

The project presents the first episode of the podcast, that takes a look at the 2022 FIFA world cup held in Qatar. Hosting the Podcast is the all knowing anthropomorphic representation of wikipedia. Her extractive language presents an “open source” perspective on the themes, therefore her scripted part being directly extracted from the wikipedia website. Joining her are two uposing parties that represent the implications of policy and technological development in the soft power discourse. Born from the ever crashing windows 7 operating system, her anthropomorphic character presents the intentions with which soft power is put into play. Approaching the subject from the legislative perspective, the anthropomorphic representation of ISIL acts as a “morality police”.

WHO IS ︎︎︎SHE/HER?

Katharina is a Romanian born designer that is currently based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The main interest within her practice is bridging the gap between the physicality of information together with analysis of social structures, especially revolving around the current geopolitical climate. She focuses on methodologies that allow design to act as an active and interactive research tool, encompassing uses of technology for political and ethical discourse.

One of the main elements in her work is a centred interest into system analysis. The developing world of design is a playground that should consist of multidisciplinary collaborations that embrace a deconstructive view on the world around us. Thus, helping us develop a critical and multilayered design lens, to have a better understanding of who we are, how our environments work and where our future is taking us.

YOUR MIND

Mind your Mind
You live most of your life in your head.
Make it a nice place.
The past is gone and the future is uncertain.
Mind your mind, bring it back to the present.
This is your re-mind-er.
Re-mind your mind.
That your happiness depends on the quality of your thoughts.

3. THE BRAND NEW REALITY

“The brand new reality” is a mapping simulation of the Design Academy Eindhoven 2020 graduation show. Covid times impacted the social events that are the basis of educational flow. Material preparation for the  Dutch design week and 6 long months of designing for your future is something that DAE students look forward to. The circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic placed the graduation show into the virtual realm. Thus, opening up questions of navigation between digital and physical spaces. How do you design spatial flexibility and user interaction online?

This segment in time (2020 graduation show) focuses on the student’s experience, designer-audience interaction, questions of bringing physical objects into the virtual world, the individual together with the crowd and designing online panels for debate.

The virtual realm offers opportunities that can be developed in symbiosis with the environment and context. Limitless possibilities of interface design can enhance online user experience and simultaneously supplement the graduates projects.

4.NOTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

Click_gif to view full video

MANIFESTO In memory of uncertainty. Nothing happens for a reason. This is the truth. Why do flowers bloom into pure beauty and I not. My human condition forces me to block my growth with dirty thoughts of uncertainty. Nothing happens for a reason. There is no greater energy that powers our life. All that exists is your mindfulness That leads you into a wonderland of chaos. Does he love me, does he not, does he love me, does he not. Nobody cares. I rip apart a flower, torturing the thought of falling into madness. I could have let the flower live and I could have made something happen, but nothing happens for a reason. Then it was over. I decided to not be a shit person, I decided to choose life. The game changer. I don’t have to tell you things are bad, everybody knows things are bad. You try to create sense for existence, but you fail. Liberate and allow things to happen. Lie. Allow yourself to occupy time. Allow yourself to free time. Define your territory. Create no safe space.
Nothing happens for a reason.

5. SPECULATIVE DESIGN

When the internet first booted up in 1969 it was made up of a grand total of four computers. Today it’s estimated that the internet consists of around five million terabytes of data. That’s more than five trillion megabytes of data stored on countless servers, computers and drives. Of this five million terabytes only about 200 terabytes can be indexed by web search.
That’s 0.004% .

This 0.004% of the internet is accessible to the public in the form of over 4.5 billion indexed websites. Which means that 99.996% of the internet is inaccessible without permissions and passwords and is not indexed by standard search engines.
What if accessing this 99.996% was a normality?
